I had this same problem. I love art, but my practical side said to study biology and medicine. I was horrible at sciences, so I switched to art. Now I work in real estate, and I use my art and rhetoric skills everyday. I'm happy with my career and my hobbies (art). I say do what you love, you'll find a way to make money doing it. If you are really dedicated, the world needs artists. You just won't make a ton of $ with it, so if $ is important, go with the practical.

Choose what you love doing. Don't think of it as just a job think of it as a career. My major is defiantly not going to get me good paying job but its in the industry I love so its worth it to me and its not that easy to find a job. Choose something that will make you happy. there are so many people out there who have an amazing job that's pays good money but they hate it and are miserable. In the end, don't listen to other people. Choose what feels right for you.

I was going to be a chemical engineer when I was in college. I wound up being an electrician and have been for 13 years and I LOVE my job. But in a few weeks, I'm gonna be mangaging an electrical prefabrication shop. I won't be making anywhere near the amount of money that I would have been making if I'd stuck with chemical engineering, but you know what? I really don't care about the money. The satisfaction of what I do is worth more to me than the money that I could have been making. You should take a skills/aptitude test at your local college and see what field you should go into. It just might save you some money in student loans.

Most people say that family is most important. If so, then you need to decide to what extent you would like to support a family. If you don't want a family, then you only need to support yourself and you have a wider range of career options. I would not choose the music industry because it has too many problems that may never be resolved. People are exchanging music and music sales are declining. Music is a fine minor, but don't major in it. Very few people get jobs in the music industry. Picking a major shouldn't be an either/or situation. You want to maximize the combination of financial reward and job satisfaction. You could be a music teacher which would generate a satisfactory income at least here in the U.S. A major in teaching with a minor in music would be great. Another idea would be to major in business and/or technology and minor in music. Then you could work for an entertainment company. You might be able to edge your way into the creative side of the business by rubbing shoulders with those employed on that side of the business. Your focus should be on finding a way to combine your love of music with an income that will support you and possibly a family.
