Should I leave my country? What are some ways I can do that?
Indonesia. As much as I want to apply "Ask not what your country can do for you", I'm fed up. I couldn't even do the good things I dream to do for my country, because people who uphold justice and righteousness only get marginalized and jaded. I'm horrified by this place's base morality. I graduated high school from Australia but my diploma was legally declined because the govt perceives returning students from abroad as either faking it, or assume that the unfinished studies must be due to an irresponsible life of the party. I returned because of health and financial setbacks, and am intending to start a new life in my own country. I've been with a university in Jakarta for 3 years, but am not allowed to graduate unless I retake my primary and secondary school exams and pay hundreds of dollars to the government for it (a large percentage, I'm sure, which never reached the govt but would be pocketed by my tutor). I retook my grade 9 exam today (there's this special program where kids who failed to graduate can get their diploma) and the teachers - CIVIL SERVANTS - were handing out the answers to the test, which I blatantly refused. They laughed at me for doing this 2-hour math test without cheating, and tried to give me the paper of a boy who finished before me. My uni pretends as if it were in London, and brainwashes the students into thinking that their Indonesian heritage is worthless in the face of globalization. They invest in interior design and sound systems to make the campus appear hip and commercial, but hire retired movie stars to teach the classes. My classmates have no work ethic and no manners - and that becomes very difficult for me, since this program relies mostly on group projects. And the teachers and staff think it's normal - so they constantly torment and intimidate us like 5-year-old spoiled brats. So much injustice around me. Factory workers doing 18-hour days and living in cardboard boxes at the dumpsite of their workplace. Poor people dying from preventable causes because the hospital turns a blind eye to those who can't show the money. Indigenous tribes having their land and culture snatched in the name of industrialization; their kids brainwashed by force into modernization. City kids enslaved to their parents ambition; attending expensive schools that teach them to be Western, being raised by nannies and the trashy media, lacking the experience of parental love and respect but instead have it substituted by consumerism. The police lets offenders get away by offering the option of paying a "peacemaking fee". The government hires pop singers to make our country's laws, and gives away free laptops and luxury cars for parliament members using tax money. How can I live in a filthy place like this; not to mention, raise kids here? I've attempted many things to make this country a better place: publish writings, co-start a counselling service for post-abortive women, volunteer in disaster relief projects, hosted a political talk show for students on the radio, attend church prayer rallies, started up a theater company... all for the love of my country ... and yet nothing lasted. Nothing changed for the better, nobody benefitted from my hard work, and all I got back was failure, betrayal, setbacks, and heartache. Don't get me wrong, I love my country. If I didn't, I wouldn't feel this way about it. My beautiful country has a precious history and heritage, and it will forever be a part of me. I'm just heartbroken that my people are treating themselves like this, and they wonder why they can't proudly wear their Indonesian identity on their sleeve in the face of the international world. If I had the power change the way my country sees itself, the society's attitudes and behaviors, I would. But I'd hate to continue toiling futile effort only to be disappointed; and I'm starting to think that I deserve to live in a place where my vision and values are appreciated, where I will actually have the opportunity and the resources to act upon them and make things happen. Who knows, maybe making it big abroad will give me more power to eventually come back to my country with the blessing I've always dreamt of showering it with. I've been thinking about leaving my country to take a master's degree and work as an expat journalist. My fiance is a lawyer. He grew up in and graduated from Europe (Netherlands), and is open to live abroad when we get married; perhaps by joining a multinational company here as a legal staff and then being transferred to an office in another country. Australia, Argentina, Chile, and Dubai are among our top lists; I would have added Israel, but my country has no diplomatical ties with it. Should I leave? If so, how do I plan to do so as a married couple in 2-5 years time? If not, then what can I do to make my existence in this country more fruitful Btw my brother is a US citizen so I'm wondering if getting sponsored for a Green Card there is an option. Out of all the countries I've lived in, the US has been the one that best accomodates immigrants. I know that every country has its own "sins", but there are actually countries where I could be happy despite that. I was happiest when I lived in Australia and Belgium, and feel much at home in the U.S. While moral degradation and injustice also take place in these countries, at least the work ethic in schools and the workplace are much better, the laws are enforced consistently, the government actively acts upon the people's needs, the lifestyle is more conducive for self development and family life, and citizens don't get singled out just because they've traveled the world and studied elsewhere and returned to make their country a better place. Back to the question: should I leave? How? Otherwise, how could I survive and thrive in Indonesia without ingesting its moral poison?

Sorry to hear this about Indonesia. When I taught there, my students (adults) were polite, hard-working, eager to learn, and I came to love the country and its people. Of course, there was plenty of corruption then, too. Some things really have not changed. Corruption is everywhere. Obama plays golf with a guy under indictment for various crimes, and who contributed hundreds of thousands in campaign contributions. If you think some other country is squeaky-clean, you are going to run into problems wherever you go. Any time there is a huge glut of humanity, especially a huge glut in the workforce, competition becomes extreme and corruption escalates. It is always a consequence of overpopulation! Keep your own nose clean. Keep your standards and your self-respect high. Seek out friends, coworkers, etc, who likewise hold high standards. Good luck to you.

I understand feeling you have a moral obligation to your country. But you won't contribute to it by suffering. And life is so short. Put yourself in a position/place where you can become strong, so you can give back later. In the meantime - it would be something to make a documentary about your experience... to approach the absurdity with art. The contrasts you've mentioned would work brilliantly in visual narrative, which can be more effective/accessible than text and more easily grasped by outside audiences. (Your current uni would be a good place to set it, initially...) You're well placed to communicate your observations and your passion with outsiders. (From a pragmatic point of view, it would also help an application to journalism school.)

I started looking into Obama's life. Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California. He is very open about his two years at Occidental; he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. 'Barry' (that was the name he used all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan. During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia, next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family. My question - Where did he get the money for this trip? Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? It's not cheap! to say the least. Where did he get money for tuition? Student Loans? Maybe. After Columbia, he went to Chicago to work as a Community Organizer for $12,000. a year. Why Chicago? Why not New York? He was already living in New York. By 'chance' he met Antoin 'Tony' Rezko, born in Aleppo Syria, and a real estate developer in Chicago. Rezko has been convicted of fraud and bribery this year. Rezko, was named 'Entrepreneur of the Decade' by the Arab-American Business and Professional Association'. About two years later, Obama entered Harvard Law School. Do you have any idea what tuition is for Harvard Law School? Where did he get the money for Law School? More student loans? After Law school, he went back to Chicago. Rezko offered him a job, which he turned down. But, he did take a job with Davis, Miner, Barnhill & Galland. Guess what? They represented 'Rezar' which is Rezko's firm. Rezko was one of Obama's first major financial contributors when he ran for office in Chicago. In 2003, Rezko threw an early fundraiser for Obama which Chicago Tribune reporter David Mendelland claims was instrumental in providing Obama with 'seed money' for his U.S. Senate race. In 2005, Obama purchased a new home in Kenwood District of Chicago for $1.65 million (less than asking price). With ALL those Student Loans - Where did he get the money for the property? On the same day Rezko's wife, Rita, purchased the adjoining empty lot for full price. The London Times reported that Nadhmi Auchi, an Iraqi-born Billionaire loaned Rezko $3.5 million three weeks before Obama's new home was purchased. Obama met Nadhmi Auchi many times with Rezko. Now, we have Obama running for President. Valerie Jarrett, was Michele Obama's boss. She is now Obama's chief advisor and he does not make any major decisions without talking to her first. Where was Jarrett born? Ready for this? Shiraz, Iran. Do we see a pattern here? Or, am I going crazy? On May 10, 2008 The Times reported, Robert Malley advisor to Obama was 'sacked' after the press found out he was having regular contacts with 'Hamas ', which controls Gaza and is connected with Iran. This past week, buried in the back part of the papers, Iraqi newspapers reported that during Obama's visit to Iraq, he asked their leaders to do nothing about the war until after he is elected, and he will 'Take care of things'. Oh, and by the way, remember the college roommates that where born in Pakistan? They are in charge of all those 'small' Internet campaign contributions for Obama. Where is that money coming from? The poor and middle class in this country? Or could it be from the Middle East? And the final bit of news. On September 7, 2008, The Washington Times posted a verbal slip that was made on 'This Week' with George Stephanapoulos. Obama on talking about his religion said, 'My Muslim faith'. When questioned, 'he made a mistake'. Some mistake! All of the above information I got on line. I completely agree with you. People need to know this! I feel this is much more important that Palin spending $100,000(+) on clothes. How much money does Michelle Obama spend? I gave up on this question awhile ago. Obama has several different levels of support and you cannot seem to reason with any of them. I don't really care who anyone votes for as that is an individual choice, but I would like to see people honestly examine the candidates. I do know several people who originally stated they were going to vote for Obama, but later changed their minds after a careful look at his record, platform and past associations. The reason they give me is because once he was exposed to scrutiny, they felt he was not what he represents himself to be. I think the biggest problem though is that the Republican candidate is no shining example either. People really do want change in our country, but they aren't going to get it from the current crop.

I gave up on this question awhile ago. Obama has several different levels of support and you cannot seem to reason with any of them. I don't really care who anyone votes for as that is an individual choice, but I would like to see people honestly examine the candidates. I do know several people who originally stated they were going to vote for Obama, but later changed their minds after a careful look at his record, platform and past associations. The reason they give me is because once he was exposed to scrutiny, they felt he was not what he represents himself to be. I think the biggest problem though is that the Republican candidate is no shining example either. People really do want change in our country, but they aren't going to get it from the current crop.

Hello, Lately, I have noticed that I hardly encounter any electronics being made in Japan anymore. It seems that Japanese manufacturers must have outsourced everything to China to save money, which can sometimes mean that they have sacrificed quality to make a profit. While I have had a few decent Chinese-made goods, I prefer Japanese goods hands down, primarily because of their solid QA record and the formidable Japanese work ethic... I was thinking of buying an MP3 player/video player combo as well as a digital camera, but nearly all the ones I have seen at Wal-Mart, etc are made in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, or even Vietnam (which is supposedly trying to become a smaller, cheaper version of China in the manufacturing sector).. If anyone knows of any electronics that are still made in Japan (or even the USA- I know that will bring a laugh to some people but you never know) please let me know. I am partial to the quality I am used to, and although China may have Japanese quality control, they are still too new on the scene to elicit any interest from me. Thanks again!

The answer, by the way..both Obama and his wife had both scholarships, and financial aid that they paid back from their own earnings. If you want to see their tax returns, there is a link to that. Quit with the "how can someone like "him" afford all this"? He is a successful and educated person, who pays his bills. No welfare. As for Barry... having a childhood nickname is a solid American trait. Not some conspiracy.

I couldn't agree with you more. This is the most scariest election of my adult life! I feel americans want change so bad that they might just get that change, but the wrong change. I am voting for McCain, and I am pretty conservative because I believe in working hard for your dollar and not to live off the government. My husband and I are students, but in the midst of all of this I maintain a FT job at the hospital and he works in construction PT. I would love to join amongst others that possibly could bring this campaign higher with John McCain. Do you know how to do that?

To add to your list of items, where did he live when attending Columbia. He has never cited an actual address only vague references to neighborhoods and streets. There are no gas, electric, cable or other records to support that he ever lived in NYC. Was he living WITH somone at the time? He talks in one of his many books about a drug addicted roomate but claims he never did drugs with him. Still cannot nail down an actual address. In fact, since we so often deal with Muslim nations, having someone at the top who at least understands something about them should be good to have. Obama passed up working as a lawyer after his years in law school, a job that would have guaranteed him a large salary, to do community organizing in a city. When he attended law school, he graduated top of his class. No amount of funding will get you there if you can't get there yourself, which probably means he scored a lot of scholarships. His associations with so many of these disreputable characters of his past have been debunked, by and large. The one situation provided here doesn't even prove anything. All it does is lead to speculation about whether or not this person was giving him a large amount of money. Supporting a campaign and providing small sums of money doesn't say you're automatically in league with them.

I have changed my mind three times since than. I watch all the news channels, jumping from one to another. I must say this drives my husband crazy. But, I feel if you view MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News, you might get some middle ground to work with. About six months ago, I started thinking 'where did the money come from for Obama'. I have four daughters who went to College, and we were middle class, and money was tight. We (including my girls) worked hard and there were lots of student loans. I started looking into Obama's life. Around 1979 Obama started college at Occidental in California. He is very open about his two years at Occidental, he tried all kinds of drugs and was wasting his time but, even though he had a brilliant mind, did not apply himself to his studies. 'Barry' (that was the name he u sed all his life) during this time had two roommates, Muhammad Hasan Chandoo and Wahid Hamid, both from Pakistan. During the summer of 1981, after his second year in college, he made a 'round the world' trip. Stopping to see his mother in Indonesia, next Hyderabad in India, three weeks in Karachi, Pakistan where he stayed with his roommate's family, then off to Africa to visit his father's family. My question - Where did he get the money for this trip? Nether I, nor any one of my children would have had money for a trip like this when they where in college. When he came back he started school at Columbia University in New York. It is at this time he wants everyone to call him Barack - not Barry. Do you know what the tuition is at Columbia? He already got voted in so I think it is too late for this. However, you have very many valid points. College is expensive so where got the money is questionable. Student loans... doubt it. Scholarships... doubt it. With the schools he went to and with the job he started with, the money owned would have increased because of interest. And the money for traveling costs who knows. I have a friend who went to Harvard for all four years of college maybe 10 years ago and he was (actually his parents) 100,000 plus in debt. I think it was fairly well known that he was a Muslim and went to mosque when he was younger, but to be honest I think a true Muslim would have a VERY difficult time calling themself a Christian. well, hopefully i don't get reported for this answer cause i've already had 3 people that didn't like what i said but it was all the truth!!! oh well here i go...i don't trust obama. i felt at first he was the muslim messiah but now i feel that he is the anti- christ. on youtube is says this. burack= 6 Hussein=7 obama=5, 6+7+5= 18. 18/3 (first, middle and last name = 3) 18/3=6. so 6-6-6. And that's not all i know theres a lot more that i don't want to talk about here cause never know who's looking. anyway, he will soon turn against israel and it's says in Revelation that in the end all nations will do this. He already got voted in so I think it is too late for this. However, you have very many valid points. College is expensive so where got the money is questionable. Student loans... doubt it. Scholarships... doubt it. With the schools he went to and with the job he started with, the money owned would have increased because of interest. And the money for traveling costs who knows. He had to be getting money for someone. Also about the Muslim religion; I believe he is truely a Muslim, but he says he is not to not hurt his political status. Saying that, there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim unless you are a radical who thinks people who are not Muslim should die, etc. This stuff is in the koran.

It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out, won't it? I have a friend who went to Harvard for all four years of college maybe 10 years ago and he was (actually his parents) 100,000 plus in debt. I think it was fairly well known that he was a Muslim and went to mosque when he was younger, but to be honest I think a true Muslim would have a VERY difficult time calling themself a Christian. If you have ever known any Muslims personally you would know this edit: I don't think HE is the anti Christ, but I think if the Lord is coming back it will be during Obamas administration, however long that will be, of course up to 8 years.

You have way too much time on your hands with conspiracy theories and all. But Obama and his wife had a ton of student loan debt from Harvard Law School that they only got out of debt after his second book "Audacity of Hope" when he made a lot of money from that.

FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have never owned a gun nor has my wife but we have both applied for permits. We have taken everything out of the stock market before Obama declares it "community property". There is nothing I can do about my 401K Like I said extreme fear because his policies are worse than Jimmy Carters which brought 21% home interest rates and 20% unemployment not to mention millions of jobs going over seas because of the high taxes. You go girl! I applaud you for not fawning all over Obama like the majority of the U.S. is. Even though it's too late to do anything about the fact that he's now our president, I think it's a good idea to keep tabs on him. People who say "What does it matter now? He"s our president, no sense in getting all bent out of shape" are, I think, almost just as foolish as the people that voted Obama into office! We don't just suddenly give up on our country and the things we stand for just because we get a bad leader into the White House! One person who commented you saying you have too much time on your hands--I vehemently disagree. Are we not supposed to care who's leading our country? Who's suppose to uphold our views and values? Who's supposed to keep our country great? I think it's great that you are investing time into researching about who's gonna be or who IS leading our country.
