College essay... help!!!?

College essay... help!!!?
Evaluate a significant experience, achievement, risk you have taken, or ethical dilemma you have faced and its impact on you. I Regret My Pessimism To make a change needs more than just willingness. “Don’t stop believing” that we often hear from Glee series is not wrong. I have proved it. Although Indonesia is not an English-speaking country, there are many English competitions held here. They are often held by government or education institutions. They can be in any forms or systems. But, there was sadness when I saw the condition in my city, Pontianak. There are only few English competitions held in this city, about 2-3 competitions every year. Those competitions are also not held in a proper system. They are often ineffective and unfair and the adjudicators are also unqualified and incompetent. It is the biggest challenge that I ever faced when my friends and I who are members of Ganesha English Community decided to hold a huge English event, an English event with national system. The reason behind this decision was not more than a will to make a change. I was chosen to be the head of Event Department that handled four competitions: Debate, Speech, Storytelling, and Spelling Bee. Creating a different concept was not easy. It cost me extra hard works because we wanted to do the best. But, funding was our problem. The school did not have enough money and the registration fees could not cover all the needs. The amount of money we had was not enough to hold 4 competitions, while the event day was getting nearer. Some of the committee members, including me, were pessimist. I tried to persuade the Head of Committee, Jeffry, to hold only 1-2 competitions. But Jeffry did not give up. He insisted on holding 4 competitions. He wanted to make a total change in his senior year. He kept encourage the committee to look for sponsorships and donation from government and private institutions. Jeffry’s belief on miracle was not useless. For about a week before the event day, the committee had succeeded to get the money needed for the competitions. Finally, the competitions could run. It was appreciated by many people: the board of juries, school teachers, participants. Even the West Kalimantan Department of Education later adapted the system we used. We were so happy and proud, especially Jeffry. He had brought us to success beyond the limits. Our dream to make a change came true. From this experience, I learned one thing. Hard works have to be followed by faith. There is always a way for those who endeavor and believe. Then I regret my pessimism.

. Maybe use 'takes' rather than 'needs' . Maybe say 'The song “Don't Stop Believing” . That we often hear on the series 'Glee' rather than “That we often hear from series 'Glee'” . 'Educational institutions' rather than 'education institutions' . 'Any form or system' rather than 'any forms or systems' . 'Condition OF my city' rather than 'condition IN my city' . 'Only a few' rather than 'only few' . 'It WAS the biggest challenge' rather than 'it IS the biggest challenge' . 'That I HAVE ever faced' rather than 'that I ever faced' . You need a comma after 'my friends and I' (my friends and I, who are members of Ganesha English Community, decided to hold) . 'hard work' rather than 'hard works' . 'Pessimistic' rather than 'pessimist' . 'encouraging' rather than 'encourage' . 'donations' rather than 'donation' . 'in miracles' rather than 'on miracle' . 'in getting' rather than 'to get' . 'hard work has to be' rather than 'hard works have to be'

Considering a co-op postgraduate program in Canada. How should I prepare?

Considering a co-op postgraduate program in Canada. How should I prepare?
I will be graduating with a bachelor's degree in Communication from Indonesia in mid 2011, and I have a pending permanent residency for Canada which I must activate by 2012. My city of preference would be Vancouver, but I really am willing to consider anywhere in Canada. My current GPA is 3.61, and I'm planning to get a scholarship, or at least financial assistance which I can supplement by working in Canada. I am looking for information on a postgraduate program about community development in developing countries; how geography, the sociopoliticocultural climate, and the education of those countries impact the advancement of those nations; and how international organizations and foreign relations with developed countries can help the advancement of those developing countries. In terms of prerequisite, I'd imagine that communication will be a widely used discipline in this kind of studies; plus in my current bachelor's program I have studied subjects like anthropology, sociology, intercultural communication, psychology, Napoleonic law, and politics. I'd eventually want to split my residence between Indonesia and Canada, conducting community development projects in Indonesia by means of education, vocational equipment of young people, and small business development among competent adults. If possible, I'd prefer to not have to ask my parents to pay for anything; which means that I will need to work when I come to Canada. I've been informed of "co-op" programs where international students can come to study postgrad at a Canadian college while working on an internship program and getting paid for it; and if I need more money still, I can apply for additional work on campus or find a scholarship. I'm setting a goal to come to Canada by September 2011. The Canadian Education Services International in Jakarta has told me to prepare mainly a TOEFL or IELTS test, my latest transcript from my current bachelor program, and a college and program in mind; which I will undoubtedly prepare ASAP. In terms of finance, how should I prepare? I've been told that an international student in Canada should expect to spend about CA$800-CA$1000 per month, including room and board, transportation, books, health insurance etc. So I'm assuming that from here at least I should prepare airline tickets, the first installment of tuition fees, living funds for the first month or two and settle with the co-op program to make sure that I have a job as soon as I arrive there? How does this work out? How much could I make on co-op, and what kind of work would it be? How much could I make on campus work, say assisting professors in classes or research? If my program is only about a year, what can I do to get a good scholarship or financial assistance, say within the first three months I arrive in Canada? Any ideas how I can plan a well thought out financial strategy between now and February 2011? Thanks Lisa. I've been told that $CA800-1000 is about an all-in budget for a student living on campus in the dorm, but I wouldn't know. What do you say is a reasonable student budget for Vancouver, and would co-op and/or on-campus work assistance cover that? What are some other things that I will have to take into account in planning my finances to go study in Canada by next year?

Hello, first thanks for answering the question on moving to Holland from Canada, and I actually live in Vancouver (yes, i followed your link). In regards to the co-op programs I really don't have a solid answer for you other than I did have several friends completing post graduate studies at one of the universities here, and they still needed outside employment to fund themselves. Unfortunately your figures for living allowances are very low for Vancouver. It's not clear in your question weather you will be living on campus or off campus. If your planning on living in Vancouver off campus you can expect to be paying anywhere from 800-1000 just on monthly rent. A transportation pass will cost around $100/ month, books are very expensive, in the thousands. I'm not sure as an international student what you will be charged for health care but we pay about $60 per individual/ month. As well, these figures will change if it's a boarding house or studenresidencece. Good luck, sorry I couldn't help you more, and further questions about vancouver, feel free to ask....Lisa

what to do , what to do...?

what to do , what to do...?
ok , my grandad is in his 80's , and his doctor has been telling him for the past two years to go to a rest-home , we moved to indonesia last week , and we havent found an apartment yet , we are still looking , and were no where near settled down. my grandfather has been telling me that he wants to come here for a holiday , but whenever my father is talking to him , he doesnt mention it .. he told me on the phone today that he plans on visiting us next month and asking our adress , but we dont even have one yet.. i am worried that once he gets here , he will be very ill from the long flight from autralia to indonesia .. he said he is feeling like a lonely old man , but that is really all his fault .. he didnt look after his wife , she left him , he didnt look after his money , he now has none ...because he likes to impress people and used to take young ladys out for dinner and taking them on holidays & paying for everything and then go on about how 'it turned heads ' and all those ladys would keep ringing him , he had a good business , was earning a reasonable amount of money ..but now its all gone .. all his workers are retiring and there are people calling up asking with jobs , but he says he cant , because he only has a few workers left as they are all retiring and hes too old to train more people bcoz he is very old now.. and he has no more money.. no women call him any more , now that he has no more money.. he gets very grumpy and shouts alot at people on the phone , he talks like he is a rich man , and that has led his friends to not talk to him anymore.. he doesnt have anything left in australia ..not even a house .. but he receives money from the government (pention) and the government will subsidise his daily medication because he has had about 6 heart attacks and a lot of minor strokes .. the government will pay for him to go to a rest home in australia .. i am worried that once he gets here .. he will be very sick .. and my father has just moved here and has lots of pressure on his job , he is working 7 days a week at the moment until everthing is running smoothly which could be a few months away. we are just about to enrol in school , so we are really not settled yet..and hearing my grandfather say he is coming here .. is worrying me , because i think it will stress my dad .. i have mentioned a little bit about this to my dad and he just said he doesnt want his dad to come here and pulled more cigarettes out .... it is very hard because no insurance company will insure him .. we have made many inquiries ..and where we are is just a very hard place for him .. so i dont know how my dad will juggle all this .. since we are new to this country .. another thing that worries me .. is him not wanting to leave .. i think that he will buy a one way ticket and want to stay with us permantly .. we could not handle this , since he is supposed to be in a rest home .. and we will not be living in a house made for old people...we will be in a apartment maybe 30 stories high..and it is not close to a hospital due to all the traffic.. he has other children in aus , but he never even visits them ! he had one son , who he never visited since he was 5 ! and he still hasnt visited his sons widow ..or his grandchildren from them , or his great granddaughter .. he has another son who lives just two hours away and he never visits them.. i dont know why he wants to visit us and be a burden ? we are such a long way away .. and when we lived in the pacific , myself and my mom used to fly to australia every 3 months to visit him , because he would say he was lonely .. he is also an actor .. it was his proffesion for many year.. he did many pantomines and was offered jobs over seas as an actor.. so i cant really tell if he is emotional or just pretending , he trys to make us feel sorry for him , and hang his botttom lip.. but hes really old to travel now..he might end up very sick.. he needs to lie down atleast once every hour and hes been like that for years .. he also goes on about his friends living in retirement villages and cost three hundred and fifty thousand $ ... but all those friends had houses that they sold to move there.. he doesnt i think he feels we should pay for him to live in a fancy retirement village or he will come live here with us .. we have been internationally transferred 4 times this year and what if we have to do it again ? we even struglle to pay our international schooling ,so hes just going to another expense.. i dont know why he is trying to burden us ..where he is now is the best place for him becaus of the financial aid ..and the medical resources..maybe if we were in a country tht had good resources for oldies .. and had our own house ..we could make him a grandpa wing and he could live next door to us ,and eat with us . but not here ..were just not in tht position .. im sorry for the longness , and i know this sounds mean , but i just dont understand and dont kn

Sounds like gramps is telling YOU on the fone about the visit, and not dad, because he already KNOWS dad will have NONE of it! Gramps is thereby playing on YOUR sympathies as his means to come and live with you! Since he does NOT mention the visit to dad, he probably does not really plan to attempt such a journey...so whatever you do, DON'T give him any address details, or gramps will interpret the info you give as an open invitation to come to Indonesia!
