So, what is so wrong with Protectionism?

So, what is so wrong with Protectionism?
Look at the tag on your shirt..where was it made?Mine says China... Now grab an office supply, got some envelopes here..says Indonesia... you can do this with just about anything in your house..So until somebody gets up and says 'HEY we are not going to trade with Countires who pay slave wages too not only protect them and their human rights for a fair living wage, but also too protect the jobs in the USA" the jobs are not coming back...Sure you can buy shirts at Walmart for 8 bucks, but wouldn't you rather pay 15 and an American be paid 15 too 20 bucks for the work? Lets but it this way when China send a product too us too buy they pay a small import tax ,compared too what it would cost an American company too make it. Thus those "tax breaks" we are giving out are going back too big business, too do more big business in China. Not here Not until we find a President who is willing too protect us,aka Protectionism, are we ever going too get our jobs back.If we do that those of us who can not or did not go too College can make a living wage. This also will bring the entitlement programs under control and save future generations SS and Medicare. With more tax payers also comes a balanced budget and enough money too start paying the Deficit ,that is now at 1.4 trillion dollars down... Capitalism works if the Goverment is willing too protect it's people. I believe in free trade through out the states, however when it comes too trading with different Countires there should be rules and regulations too protect the American Citizens, big or small best intrest... I have yet too hear a talking head from the Republican side or Democratic side bring this up... Wonder why? Sure there would be inflation of food and other supplies but as fast as it is going up,Our job market will be opening up too with New permanentreal jobs, not shovel ready jobs that will end.We will also be able too get rid of the farm subsidy because they will be able to get a fair price in our market place for their goods. So there you have it...I just cut the deficit, created at least 9 million jobs, made tax payers, cut or dependance on entitlement programs and a good possibility of saving SS and Medicare for future generations. Would also be a good chance too not be number 1 in the World with the highest Corp Tax Rate.. This too would create jobs.. So is it just the fact we may have too wait for an American Phone Company or TV company too get up and going? That we may have inflation for a year or so before companies get the product out at a steady pace?Or is it the fact that they really simply don't care about us and care more about the rest of the World Market...All I see is fat cats that live here with business in other Countires getting richer and richer and the middle class and lower class getting poorer and poorer. They are not creating jobs here..Am I missing something? In the 90's before Nafta and Gatt there where over 200 tomato farmers in Florida in 2000 there where 16...How many jobs where lost their alone?

What is wrong with protectionism? You mean besides the fact that it doesn't work and only leads to lower quality at higher prices?

you are right EXCEPT it surpresses trade and has failed every time it hasever been tried why not have protection tarriffs between states? same idea Trade can be fair, usually it is not. but as long as there is free enterprise, profit economics. there will be specialliztion and relative advantage. the problem is when international corporations theink ONLY of profit that the pain is grater than the gain.

it does not work - because the lowest waged in an economy cant buy the basics that are artificially ramped up in price - phased protectionism as an idea to help infant industries & may even work as long as its managed and not made a crutch to depend on. you cannot escape a global environment - the old rules become bunk - when small wages do actually pay for food in a cheap economy - its not always easy to compete. All nations go through this - the next 10- 15 years will see China levelling out as the demand for better social conditions, housing etc becomes a necessity - have a look at African expansion - china is dumping billions there because Africa as a continent is ready to take off - in 10yrs we will increasingly read - made in nigeria etc!!!

protectionism was tried at the outset of 'the great depression'...which made things worse! we increased tariffs on imports, and our 'trading partners' raised tariffs on imports from us. getting the corporate tax rate back in line would help our companies be more competitive, would create jobs here, and would eliminate current incentives for companies to move overseas i keep hearing that 'we need to raise taxes'...which makes ZERO sense. the other day, we were putting in a new conference table in our training room-it was very heavy, and there were only 2 people trying to carry it. rather than expect those 2 people to do all the lifting while others who would also be making use of the table just stood around watching, we found 4 more people to lend a hand and the job was much easier. tax policy needs to be like that- we don't need to be making those who already pay most of the taxes already pay even more; we need to expand the tax base so more people have 'skin in the game'

my shirt was made in haiti and i like how you think and your idea and your vision, but if things were made here then i'm not sure if the quality would be as high and if it isn't i wouldn't want to spend more money on it. that's the only thing.
